The blog is starting as the winter holiday seasons begin. In some places throughout the world, tomorrow is Halloween. It’s a time for lots of sweet treats, and a time for pretending to be a character that you are not. It’s a time for sweet pretending. Doesn’t that sound like fun? The good part is that on Halloween everyone knows we are all out of character.
I’m reminded of all the times I’ve gone through life unknowingly roll playing a character… the good girl, the smart/stupid student, the powerless employee, etc. Some of the roles I enjoyed, while others I felt shame or sadness. The really good news is that now I can recognize and choose my roles. If I’m being the writer, or the pretend chef, I’ll grin at my role and sometimes even dress the part. It’s fun to write while in PJ’s and slippers, and it’s fun to cook with an apron and a glass of wine. Yes, it’s fun to dress up for my roles these days. But the best part is that I get to choose my role. No longer will I pretend to be anyone but the ME I want to be. Today, I’m a pretend astronaut on my way to the planetarium. I’m actually taking my grandchildren. Who are you right now?

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.
